Asphalt for RV Pads, Trailers & Heavy Vehicles
Around Apache Junction, a driveway often has to do more than hold a couple of cars. RVs, fifth wheels, boats, utility trailers and work trucks are everywhere here — and a surface built for a sedan will not survive them. Here's what actually changes when you're paving for heavy vehicles.
The problem is pressure, not just weight
People assume a big rig is hard on pavement because it's heavy. That's part of it, but the real issue is how that weight is concentrated.
A motorhome distributes its load across a handful of tires, and every one of those contact patches presses down far harder than a car tire does. Worse, a parked RV applies that load to the exact same spot continuously, for weeks or months at a time. Asphalt is a flexible pavement — it's designed to deflect slightly and recover. Constant load in one place means it never gets to recover.
Then there are point loads, which are even more concentrated: leveling jacks, stabilizer feet, tongue jacks and landing gear can put enormous pressure through a few square inches. On hot Arizona asphalt, those will sink in.
What an RV pad needs that a driveway doesn't
More thickness. A standard residential driveway section isn't built for sustained heavy loads. An RV or trailer pad needs a thicker compacted asphalt section — how much more depends on the vehicle weight, and it's worth telling your contractor exactly what will be parked there rather than letting them assume.
A stronger base. This matters more than the asphalt itself. The base has to be excavated to the right depth, built with appropriate aggregate, and compacted properly. Skimping here is the single most common reason a heavy-use pad fails.
Attention to soil. Local soil conditions vary, and some desert soils behave poorly under load or when they get wet. A contractor who evaluates what's under the pad — rather than paving straight over whatever is there — is doing the part that determines whether the pad lasts.
Real drainage. Water reaching the base of a heavily loaded pad causes failure much faster than it would under a light-duty driveway, because the base is doing far more work.
A layout that fits. Turning radius, length, width and approach angle all matter. An RV pad that requires a fifteen-point turn to use is a pad that gets used badly — and tight, repeated maneuvering scuffs and tears asphalt.
Practical care once it's built
Use pads under jacks and stabilizers. Wood blocks, purpose-made jack pads, or steel plates spread that point load out. This one habit prevents most RV-pad damage.
Don't turn the wheel while stopped, especially in summer. Power steering scuff marks are easy to create on hot asphalt and permanent once made.
Move the vehicle occasionally if it sits for months. Even shifting position slightly gives the asphalt underneath a chance to recover.
Watch for fluid leaks. Diesel, oil, and hydraulic fluid dissolve asphalt binder. Put a drip tray under known leaks.
Be extra careful with brand-new asphalt. Fresh pavement stays soft for months in our heat. Keep heavy vehicles off a new pad for as long as your contractor recommends — and longer if it's midsummer.
Asphalt vs. concrete for RV parking
Concrete is harder and resists point loads better, and some owners prefer it for a dedicated pad. Asphalt typically costs less, goes in faster, and — importantly — is far easier and cheaper to repair or resurface if it does get damaged. Both work when built correctly for the load. Both fail when built like a light-duty driveway.
The bottom line
The mistake isn't choosing asphalt. It's paving an RV pad to driveway specifications. Tell your contractor exactly what's going to sit on it, and make sure the quote specifies base preparation and asphalt thickness rather than just a price.
