    What's Under Your Asphalt Decides How Long It Lasts

    Two driveways can look identical the day they're finished and be in completely different condition five years later. The difference is almost never the asphalt on top. It's the part nobody sees.

    Asphalt is a flexible pavement

    This is the key idea, and it explains everything else. Unlike concrete, which is rigid and spans across weak spots, asphalt flexes under load and transfers that load down into the material beneath it.

    That means asphalt is only ever as strong as what it's sitting on. Beautiful hot mix laid over a poorly prepared base will crack, rut and fail — not because the asphalt was bad, but because it was never being supported.

    What proper preparation involves

    Clearing and excavating. Vegetation, organic material and unsuitable soil get removed. Organic material decomposes and settles; anything that will decompose under your pavement is a future depression.

    Evaluating the soil. Different soils behave very differently under load and moisture. Some desert soils compact beautifully; others don't. A contractor who checks what's actually down there — instead of paving over whatever was there — is doing the most important part of the job.

    Grading for drainage. The base is shaped so water runs off the finished surface rather than pooling. This gets designed before any material goes down. Fixing drainage after paving is enormously more expensive.

    Building the aggregate base. Crushed aggregate is placed to an appropriate depth for the expected load — heavier use means a thicker base.

    Compaction. The base is mechanically compacted, usually in lifts, so it's dense and stable. This is where corners get cut most often, because under-compacted base looks exactly like well-compacted base once it's paved over. Then it settles under traffic, and the pavement above cracks.

    Then, and only then, the asphalt — laid at proper temperature, to the specified thickness, and compacted while hot.

    How you can tell it's being skipped

    You mostly can't, once it's done. That's the problem. But there are signs beforehand:

    • A quote with no preparation detail. If the estimate is one number with no mention of excavation, base depth, or compaction, you have no idea what you're buying.
    • A job that finishes suspiciously fast. Preparation takes real time and real equipment. A crew that shows up and paves the same morning did not prepare a base.
    • Paving directly over grass, dirt, or a failed old surface. Overlaying an existing sound surface is legitimate; paving over unprepared ground is not.
    • No discussion of where water goes. In a place with monsoon storms, that's a red flag on its own.

    What failure looks like later

    Settling and depressions — under-compacted base consolidating under traffic.

    Alligator cracking — interconnected cracking that means the base has failed and is no longer supporting the surface. Surface repair won't fix it.

    Edge crumbling — often unsupported or poorly compacted edges.

    Potholes appearing early — usually base failure showing through.

    The frustrating part is that all of these look like "bad asphalt" and none of them are.

    Why this is worth paying for

    Base work is the least glamorous line item in a paving quote and the one people are most tempted to negotiate down. It's also the difference between pavement you maintain and pavement you replace.

    When you're comparing bids, compare the preparation, not just the price. A cheaper quote that specifies a thinner base or skips excavation isn't a better deal — it's a smaller, shorter-lived job wearing the same surface.
